This month's DT project is a Valentine Picture Book that I created using various arts and crafts supplies.

The cover is Sticky Canvas by Claudine Hellmuth and contains a plethora of YUMMIES! I enjoyed stenciling, painting and spraying Ranger Perfect Pearl Mists over this canvas. The canvas is so versatile! It even allowed me to place rub-ons over it. This stuff is great!

This project was very dear to me and I hope you feel a sense of inspiration and start your own Valentine Picture Book!

What a lovely surprise! Today I was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Arizona College of Nursing.

The Excellence in Teaching Award was initiated to recognize outstanding teachers among faculty. The selections are determined solely by the graduating BSN students.

The students’ selections are based upon the criteria that the faculty members: teach in a creative, innovative style; stimulate students’ interests; communicate with clarity; provide a positive role model; promote professional; and personal development in students.

Every now and then one tends to lose sight of who they are as an artist. Quite often we see what others are doing and follow the lead. I have been guilty of this and it doesn't always feel good.

The following project and its process is what feels good to me. For the time being, I want to be okay with JUST that; feeling good about what comes randomly from my mind and soul and onto the paper through my hands.

This is my beautiful niece Victoria. And just like her, this piece is original, soulful, and unique.

I am so excited that the holidays are coming! I love baking, cooking, creating, and spending time with my loved ones. I always look forward to the week before Christmas because my family builds gingerbread houses and bakes dozens of cookies! YUM!!!

Greetings!

Wow! November already? Doesn't it seem like the years just disappear as you get older? It only seems like yesterday that I was pushing Zachary on the swings. Now I see him all of 15-minutes, as we sit at the dinner table together, then he is up and gone again. I cherish every moment that I have with my child. Even if it's a long hug or a quick text just to tell him that I love him. I won't let those moments escape.

I have been very busy at the university. I love my students. During the Fall and Spring months, my heart and time is devoted to these young people. Even though I spend more than 40-hours a week preparing and teaching these young minds, they give me so much in return. I truly need them as much as they need me. It's an amazing relationship. I am looking forward to the time off when my students will be on holiday break. Not because I need time away from them. But because this means I will return to the bedside and take care of patients for a couple weeks. I have made contact with my manager in the ER and she has some shifts waiting for me. You may think it's crazy of me to spend my precious time off taking care of others when I could be home crafting. Well, it's important for me as a nurse to keep my skills up. I believe it makes me a stronger teacher and a competent nurse. Plus, I love being a nurse. It gives me a sense of worth and allows me to connect with people in a loving way.

Halloween was fantastic! I spent the evening with my lovely family. It is always a joy to be around my nieces and nephews. I love them so much. Spending time with my siblings and mother is also very important to me.

Exciting Weekend!

Greetings friends!

I had such a fantastic weekend that I must share it with you!

Saturday I had a much needed day of rest and relaxation. I spent the day pampering myself and sleeping. It was wonderful!

On Sunday I spent the entire day with my sisters, nieces, and nephews. They took me to a couple of farms in Willcox, Arizona (Apple Annies) where I spent the day in the glorious sun hand picking some of my favorite produce and running through the corn mazes. I LOVED IT!

The weather is cooling off in Arizona so everyone is outside playing. I love watching families outside running, breathing, exercising, and being together with nature. It is so important.

Below is a picture of my nephew taking in the sweet rays. I love this picture!

After I got home with all of my yummies, I made a Squash Soup. I used the fresh tomatoes, squash, and green chilies I handpicked at the farm today. It was delicious. We then completed our meal with a homemade peach pie. Life is grand!

I plan to use all of the lovely pictures I took during this day trip in a mini album I am creating for Bluemoonscrapbooking. Stay tuned!

This mini took no time at all. It was fast, easy, and SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!
I am looking forward to filling the pages with all of my yummy 2010 party pictures!

This week I worked with the 7gypsies Library Drawer. Look for this to be restocked in a couple of weeks. This item is HOT HOT HOT!

I had a request from Becky H. to create something Shabby Chic. Thanks Becky! We aim to please!

This project is created to work as a card holder. I used the 12 file cards that came with the 7gypsies Library Drawer to remind me of upcoming birthdays. This way I can use the project for years to come.

The collection I used is Jubilee from K & Company.

What an AWESOME collection! I may buy some extra and hoard it! YIKES!!!
I also used the 7gypsies Mini Notebooks Ecriture and Orchestra to create an address book. So much fun!

Hi friends!

I have truly enjoyed spending quality time with my family, friends, and in my studio this summer. As summer break comes to an end, I reflect on what I accomplished these past two months and well... NOT MUCH! Should I feel bad for not cleaning out the guest bedroom closet, or stripping down the floors? Hmm...

Most of my days were spent LIVING. I cooked, baked, read, created, spent time with friends and family by the pool, and even got in a few shifts at the hospital. Overall, it felt good. Strangely, I still feel like I never had enough time to do EVERYTHING I wanted to do.

Through the inspiration of some YouTube friends, my paint brushes, easels, acrylics, watercolors, Derwent pencils, pastels, journals, and canvases have come out of the studio closet. These items haven't seen the light of day since college. I took several art classes as pre-requisites and have not dabbled in it since the late 90's. It feels good. My favorite art teacher was from Egypt and he always started class by asking us how we felt, and if "we felt like talking?" He was very cool and deeply in touch with his students and the universe. What a great memory.

Some other thoughts... Michael will be returning to the streets next week. He has not worked in the community since his shooting May 5th, 2007. Apparently the city is suffering financially (like that's a surprise) and can't afford to hire new police recruits so they are pulling officers from the academy to work the streets. I thought I had made peace with the shooting, the fact that he's a COP, and that cops get shot at. But the truth is I haven't. I guess the worrying simmered down when he took his detective job and then eventually ended up at the police academy. I know this is anxiety and I create anxiety with MY THOUGHTS. I have taken enough college courses to know that I CREATE ALL OF THIS MADNESS! But I love him and that's what I do when I love someone, worry. I can recite these trite clichés over and over with no relief: "he will be okay," "whatever happens happens," and "worrying doesn't help anything." I KNOW, I KNOW. But it doesn't make things any better. I will continue to pray over it. Not only asking the great one to keep eye over him, but to also help easy my soul and mind. My prayer beads will be getting plenty of use.

On a lighter note, I want to share my recent projects. My daily works consist of entries into my "Wreck This Journal," mini albums, 12x12 layouts, and a new venture, "The Sketchbook Project." I am so excited about this! The amazing SuziBlu got me interested in it. Check it out, http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects, and get involved if you can.

Greetings!
I spent a few hours creating some new stick pins for us! I really enjoy putting these pieces together because I enjoy designing jewelry.
I do just about everything and anything that involves paper, glass blowing, beading, fabric, sewing, painting, drawing, building, molding, cooking, and baking. I have not perfected ANY of them, but love doing them ALL.
I have been thinking about returning to school for my doctorate and had a moment of clarity today. I am going to be 41 years old and it's time that I do something fun and exciting just FOR ME.
As a Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator, I help others maintain health and fulfill their dreams of becoming RN's. My days are filled helping others directly. Don’t misunderstand me, I love caring for my community. It gives me a deep sense of belonging and commitment to my fellow people. I have thought about this today and I may not go back to get my Doctorate in Education or Nursing. I may go back to school and get a degree in Art. Yes, Art! My husband doesn’t know yet. He already thinks I’m nuts!
Is this bad? What am I thinking? Jenny says”ART SAVES”! The thought of conducting research in nursing and education excites me, but I am getting older and I want to have more COLOR in my life!
So, what are your thoughts and words of wisdom? I need a nudge...

Pretty Paper Boutique: June Tag Swap...

Greetings!

So my June Tag for Marie's swap turned out to be larger than expected. The rules were "no larger than 4x8". My tag is 5x8! YIKES!!! So sorry Marie, but that is where my imagination took me.

I have noticed a trend in my work: I have a masculine approach. Hmm? I wonder why? I find myself steering away from "cutesy" type items. I don't like using anything with "cutesy" animals or "cutesy" stamps. I don't gravitate towards the "Greeting Farm" stamps. Just not my style. I enjoy watching what you ladies create with these stamps, but for me it just doesn't do it.

What style or type of product calls out to you? I would love to hear about it!

My Son's Hands: 12x12 Layout...

Tonight while hanging out with Kathryn at the scrap beach, I created this 12x12 layout of my son.
The layout started by tracing my sons hands and cutting them out. I then selected a picture of him while we celebrated his 18th birthday.
The layout took off from there! It's so easy to create when he's the focal point.

It's been a week of mixed emotions...

Greetings!

I was hoping to have a post with nothing but great news but unfortunatly there is some bad.

First the bad. My hubby, Michael, has been very ill this past week. This is a man who is in great physical condition and is in the gym working out 5 days a week. He is the only person I have ever known to get up 3 hours before work so that he can be at the gym at 4 am for his workout.

I have been a total wreck because our family doctor and I have talked numerous times over the course of the week trying to figure out what could be happening. Dr. W has been our family physician since I was 16 years old. This long term relationship, along with my advanced degree in nursing, has kept me and Dr. W very close. He respects my input and treats me like a colleague.

We have had numerous phone calls discussing lab values, symptoms, and treatments. Michael still feels very ill in spite of our interventions. I am very worried. I hate seeing him this way. It breaks my heart. Please send Mike thoughts of hope and healing as we try to work this out.

On a lighter note, we have rescued a puppy. It has been almost a year since Vike has left us. We lost Vike, my canine son, last June to bone cancer. I keep his ashes on my bed side table. We miss him tremendously.

Chance, the new pup, is full of energy. I don't think any of us were ready for it. He is a 17-month old Boxer. He is simply precious! He acts just like a toddler! It is so funny to watch. He also loves to snuggle. It is adorable.

I also wanted to share with you a celebration my family will be having this weekend. My mother is 60-years old today and my sister Suzette and her family have come down from Illinois to help us celebrate.
This is a HUGE birthday for my mother in more than one way. We truly didn't think she would be with us to see her 60th year. She lives with Lupus and has had many issues with her organs secondary to this condition. We are blessed to have her with us and this weekend we celebrate her life and love!

In ending, this week has been an emotional roller coaster for me but I have had some time to create. It's such an amazing outlet. Please view my current YouTube Video and check out what I have been working on.

Ten Interesting Things About Me:

1. I LOVE coffee! My coffee of choice is a Venti, non-fat, white chocolate mocha without whip cream. YUMMY!

2. I will be going back to school next year for a PhD in education! YES!!!

3. I love reading non-fiction books. Some of my favorite topics are: Abe Lincoln, Quantum Physics, and anything about Eastern Philosophy.

4. I love ANYHTING having to do with art. I have worked with metals, glass, paper, fabric, paint, chalk, oils, acrylics, and clay. I use to make glass beads and sell them to jewelry designers.

5. I LOVE to cook! I have been known to start early on a Saturday morning, open a bottle of wine and cook until early evening. My boys and I then sit down for the spread and good conversation.

6. I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was diagnosed almost 2-years ago. This is an auto-immune disease that has caused many problems with a variety of my joints. It has also affected my lungs. Being a nurse, I have noticed a significant decrease in my ability to work long hours. This is one of the reasons I became a nurse educator. The work is easier on my body. I may live with this disease and it may eventually disable me, but I will not let it take over my life. I am not my disease! I am strong!

7. I LOVE a quiet house. I rarely have the TV on and only watch about 2-hours of television a week. I keep my home like a Buddhist Temple; no yelling, fighting, unkind words, no home telephone, no indoor shoes, simple decor, no clutter, plenty of sleep, and good food.

8. My husband is my best friend! We have an absolute blast together. He was almost killed in the line of duty on May 5th, 2007. The only thing that saved his life was the Kevlar vest. Stephanie Kwolek, the researcher who helped develop this synthetic material has become one of my greatest heroes.

9. I AM MADLY IN LOVE WITH MY SON! There is nothing like the bond between a son and a mother. As I write this I get teary eyed because he is almost 19. He is so beautiful and I am blessed to be his mother.

10. Family and friends are very important to me. I am not a big telephone talker, but I love long dinners with a good bottle of wine, family, and friends.

Greetings!
Here is my latest project. I am working on gifts and trades for all of my lovely friends and family.
The mini in this video will be used as inspiration for some gifts I am working on. My last day for the year at the university is this Friday, so I will have plenty of time to finish my projects.
I am actually doing pretty good with my holiday errands. I have all of my shopping done, wrapped, and under the tree. Can you believe it?
My sister's packages (she lives in Illinois) are ready for shipping and will be sent out in the morning. My menu for Christmas dinner is planned.
I feel no stress this year. I believe it's because I have such a loving, helpful, and supportive husband. He helps me so much around the house. I am truly blessed.

Tim Holtz 12 Tags of Christmas...

Greetings!

It's hard to believe that December is here! Wow! Where has the time gone? I have decided to play along with Tim Holtz 12 Tags of Christmas.
I have been following his blog daily being inspired. I also hope to win some of that loot his giving away!
Here is my first tag. I used all of the products in the picture below plus my cricut and some black lace. This tag was more challenging than expected. I spent too much time on it. Oh well, it was fun!
I also have decided to create my first 25 Days of December Album. (Inspired by Kathryn at Life on the Scrap Beach.)
My first day of December was spent with my mom, husband, and siblings. She made us the most AMAZING Mexican food. I'm afraid I'm going to gain some serious weight this holiday season. YIKES! We had a blast.
My second day of December was spent working. BORING! But I gotta bring home the bacon.
My third day was spent in my scrap room! YIPEE!!! I listened to Christmas carols and followed Tim Holtz's Blog as I created my first tag. I will post pictures of the next three real soon.
By the way, the picture below is my dear mother feeding my SPOILED ROTTEN SON during Thanksgiving dinner!

Blog Candy and DSC Mini Trade for Olga...

I have a rather large post today.

First I will be sharing with you the BLOG CANDY I will be giving away next week.

Lisa V., Kathyrn K., Kathy K., Stephanie M., and Sandra P. have each sent me a recipe. Next weekend, while we watch FOOTBALL, we will be hosting a tasting. This will be recorded and posted on YouTube on the 29th.

The winner will be selected by my lovely son and loving husband. Of course I will be munching down too, but they will make the final decision. They have emaculate palates, so I have to make sure I give each recipe my best shot.

23. 3-sheets of vintage music sheets.

Next, I have finished Olga's mini for the DSC September mini trade. This was so much fun creating! It was very therapeutic for me. I sat in my studio, put on some music, and created.

The mini you are about to see is not the exact mini Olga is receiving but a close duplicate. I didn't want to completely ruin the surprise for her. This is my copy. I ususally make two copies of my mini's so that I can keep one for myself.

I opted to do pictures instead of a video because it gives me the ability to get some close -ups on areas that I want to share with you.

I will describe a few things to you, page-by-page, and if you have any questions please leave a comment and I will get back to you!

So this is the mini! This is my primary style. I enjoy doing vintage pieces over anything else. I do however create cute mini's because there are plenty of children in my family and I love giving mini's to friends and family. But this is ultimately my most favorite style.

Page One was created using vintage watch pieces. I found a dealer on Etsy that sells amazing vintage watch faces, gears, and hands.

The large prima flower was coated with Tim Holtz Rock Candy and formed by hand.

The postage stamps are vintage, as well as the coin rolling paper and torn book page.

I used a variety of techniques throughout the mini: masking, stamping, blending, embossing, distressing, sanding, molding, collaging, and inking.

The cover also has some Tim Holtz items which I think compliments the look nicely.

The back of page one was created by cutting up some measuring tape. I also distressed a 7-gypsies pocket and added a tag.

What I absolutely love about this tag is the garter belt holder I attached at the top. It gives it a chic naughty look. Hehehe....

Page 2 and 3 were created using both vintage and current supplies. These pages are simple with room for pictures and journaling.

On this page I used transparent paper and a prima flower.

This page for some reason did not want to upload correctly. They are lips. If you notice, all of the pages of this mini have different shapes to them. This was one of Bona's requirements for the trade. So far you have seen a crown, flower and lips.

This page was made with a vintage BINGO card and some new Maya Road velvet ribbon.

This page was one of the most fun to create! It uses a lot of different techniques and has a variety of embellishments.

The page to your left is the back of the page you just saw. I used a vintage folding ruler for the body of the butterfly. The entire pocket envelope was layered with vintage paper, stamps, and Mod Podge.

This is another transparency page. It may be used for pictures or journaling.

This is the next to last page. It was left simple because I thought the paper was pretty and didn't require much.

Today I celebrate my sons life. He is 18 today and is officially an adult. GULP!!! That means I'm old. Hehehe...

I am planning a dinner for him tonight with my family. As I look back on the years, I think he has been a pretty good kid. He made some bad choices at times, but didn't we all?

He is growing up to be an amazing man. He is kind, loving, centered, optimistic, forgiving, and patient. Wow! I wonder where he gets all that from. I can tell you, NOT FROM ME!!!

He's such a cool kid...

A Celebration...

I am going to admit something that most women have an issue with.
I AM GOING TO BE FORTY YEARS OLD ON THE 23rd!!! YIKES!!!

So in celebration of my blessed life, I am giving away some BLOG CANDY!!!

My blog candy is a lovely collection of vintage pieces. It will have lace, bingo cards, music sheets, postcards, postage stamps, watch parts and broken old rulers/measuring tapes. IT IS LOVELY!!! Butterfly Acetate Video on YouTube...

My finished mini-album for Tiffanie...

I have finished Tiffanie's mini-album! This will be mailed to her tomorrow morning. This is a mini-swap that was organized by Regina and Lisa at Craft Craving Chica's. I am so excited because this is my very first swap!!!

I emailed Tiffanie to find out a little bit more about her, and she is also an educator. Her favorite colors are red and yellow, so I tried to combine both concepts in this mini.

The first two pictures are of the "extras" I am sending her. The first picture is an apple shaped mini that I cut for her on my Cricut Expression. I also cut an assortment of paper in the exact same size and shape.

The second picture is of some "extras" that I had left over while creating her exchange album.

Tiffanie asked me to "get really creative", so I tried. You will notice that the apple leafs are connected to the apple with Tim Holtz pins. I thought this might work well as a stem. I also used metal letters, numbers, and inspirational words throughout the mini.

Picture six shows a page where I used a magnet and a yellow bus embellishment to create a page that lifts open.

I am working on setting up for video, but need a couple more weeks. I should be up on youtube by the middle of September. I will do my butterfly tutorial then.

New Mini Album...

This mini album was inspired by Tim Holtz and Marion from ApieceofCraft.com (pocket envelope).

This book will be dedicated to the many memories of 2009. As a family, we have had several good and bad times this year.

In January, I was having a difficult time with a career change. In 2008 I finished graduate school and started teaching at two major universities. One was a full-time commitment and the other part-time. I didn't realize how exhausting, both mentally and physically, teach was. I have a new appreciation for educators in all levels of education. In case you are wondering, I teach nursing. I am a registered nurse with a Masters in Nursing and a specialization in Health care Education. Prior to this journey, I was a bedside nurse working in both an ICU and ER setting. I loved my job as a bedside nurse, but always felt so drawn in by the amazing energy and enthusiasm of the nursing students that worked the hospital floors. It was after I received a heart-filled thank you card and a warm hug from a young nursing student that I realized teaching was for me. I LOVE MY KIDDOS! They bring life and passion to a career that can be grueling and exhausting.

On January 9th, my father passed away. I remember the call from my mother that morning as I drove to work. This was an unexpected event. Apparently he suffered a major heart attack and was found in his bedroom by one of his closest friends.

February through May brought many teenage issues into the household, both good and bad. His adventures and journeys have not gone without plenty of tears, laughs, concern, and unconditional love. I pray that we all weather this storm.

In June, Zachary graduated from high school. My only child is almost an adult. What an amazing thought. I think about how well we have truly prepared him for life. I am most proud of his amazing kindness. He has an enormous heart. I truly believe he is an old soul. We have taught him the importance of friendship, community, charity, kinship, true love, patience, kindness, and hard work. I pray that as he grows older these become stronger and radiate in everything he hopes to accomplish.

In June we also experienced the passing of our canine son Vike. Vike was an addition to our family over 12 years ago. When I married Mike, we agreed not to have any children( my son Zachary is from a previous long-term relationship). Vike was that child that Mike and I never had. We adored him. He gave all of us so much laughter and joy. His passing is a sorrow that I can not explain. He was cremated on June 26 after a battle with cancer.

July and August have been relaxing. My family spent ten days in Hawaii and did some camping. I spent precious time with my loved ones. Family is so important and we MUST make time for them daily. Zachary surfed, visited with a friend, and we all spent time together on the beach laughing and appreciating the beauty around us.

I wait for the remainder of the year to bring me additional memories.
Whether good or bad, I am thankful.

Bona's August Acetate ATC Swap...

I have finished my ATC's cards for Bona's swap. This was a blast! I love it when I am challenged to create. It is an amazing release of positive energy.

The requirements were:

2 1/2" x 3 1/2" acetate
Alcohol Ink
Distress or Regular Embossing Powder
Distress Crackle Paint (optional)
Butterflies

I created these butterflies by inking transparency paper with Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks. I stamped the butterflies at an angle so that I would be sure to get tons of color in each of them and embossed them. I then finished each of them with glossy accents.

The card is made with transparency paper, mod podge, silver bling, distress crackle paint and prima flowers.

My Scrap Room..

Hello! I want to share my scrap area with you. This is a room that my loving husband has helped me arrange. It is about 400-square feet and has peg boards on two walls. I keep some beads and scrap supplies on the boards. The peg boards have really helped me stay organized and seem to create a more roomy area.
My tables sit right in the middle of the room. One side is dedicated to me, but the other is left clean (most of the time) for family and friends.
My husband has blessed me with this beautiful room and I am very grateful. Eventually I would love to put in custom counters and better lighting. In time...

My baby boy...

I have so many great memories of my son Zachary. My favorite memory involves "love notes." When Zach started kindergarten I would pack his lunch and leave him little notes telling him how special he was and how much I loved him. He eventually thought it was a grand idea and started writing them to me. I would find them in my lunch box at work and sit and cry in awe of this amazing soul. I kept all of them. Each and every "love note" he wrote me was special.

Eventually they quit coming much like the many other things that go to the way side once they become teenagers. But I always come back to these "loves notes" during moments when I miss him. I miss him because he is grown and for the most part has created his own little world. He is almost 18 and has tons of friends and mom has unfortunalty just become his rock. We are still very close and he tells me he loves me at least five times a day. We hug and laugh at silly things and I find myself sneeking into his bedroom late at night just to stroke his hair and watch him breath.

I miss my little boy. But I am filled with hope and excitment as I watch him grow into a beautiful man.

There are areas in the mini where you will see his "love notes." I didn't alter them in any way and simply attached them to cardstock.

Stephanie Ackerman Workshop...

Hello!

This past Saturday I spent the day with Stephanie Ackerman. She hosted two workshops in my hometown and it was the bomb!

We created two mini albums featuring new products from Teresa Collins. These products ROCK! I learned so many cool tricks. I even learned how to bind my albums. Of course I left with one of those neat bindery tools. I AM AN ADDICT!

I took some pictures of my albums. They are not complete. I was quite a bit slower than the girls at the workshop so I will put the finishing touches on these babies here at home.

This was such an awesome experience!

Starting a blog....

Being so inspired by the scrapbook artists I have been visiting on the internet, I have decided to start my own creative blog.

The great William Faulkner (1897-1962) influenced my title choice.
Here is what he said:

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life. Since man is mortal, the only immortality possible for him is to leave something behind him that is immortal since it will always move. This is the artist's way of scribbling ''Kilroy was here'' on the wall of the final and irrevocable oblivion through which he must someday pass."

Is this truly not the best explaination for our obsession with scrapping?

I am looking forward to this journey...
